POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Full Time, 40 hours per week
Monday through Friday
Location: Department of Transportation Headquarters in Newington, CT.
Reports to a Transportation Supervising Planner or employee of a higher level.
P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit
This position is eligible to apply for telework after successful completion of the working test period, and thereafter, in accordance with the Telework Policy, which can be found here. Employees in their initial working test period must work on site in the office.
Field work involving minor maintenance, moving and transport of motorcycles in all weather conditions will be required and travel primarily within the State will be necessary. Overtime may be required, especially during motorcycle training season.
The Role: This entry level position is responsible for assisting with the Motorcycle Safety program and other safety programs in the Highway Safety Office.
This position will aid in the coordination of The Connecticut Rider Education Program (CONREP), a statewide motorcycle safety training program that allows participating students to acquire their Motorcycle endorsement at CONREP training facilities.
This position will work closely with program leads to assist in providing guidance to site managers and rider coaches for the motorcycle safety program. This position will assist in formulating goals and objectives for addressing safety issues associated with motorcycle safety, as well as other programs overseen by the office. This position will work collaboratively with the CT Safety Research Center to query and analyze highway safety data utilizing Connecticut’s Crash Data Repository. Additionally, this position will review, evaluate, and monitor Highway Safety grants for conformance with reporting requirements budgetary parameters and program efficiency.
Efforts within this office contribute to the development of the Triennial Highway Safety Plan and the Annual Highway Safety Report, which ensure compliance with Department policies, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidelines, and relevant federal laws and regulations.
Examples of Duties
Assist in review and approval of grant applications for various projects
Assist in review and processing of HSO grants, community college proposals and reimbursement claims
Assist in review and processing of claims
Assist in performing project monitoring review activities and prepare related documentation
Assist in field monitoring of motorcycle ranges for conformity and safety
Update Department of Motor Vehicles database for motorcycle endorsements
Assist Program Manager with recruiting and training of rider coaches, development and oversight of training sites
Participate in various virtual conferences, webinars and meetings

Eligibility for promotion to the target classification of Transportation Planner 1 is earned upon successful completion of the training program.
Target class: Transportation Planner 1
Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree will serve a two (2) year training program.
Candidates with a Master’s degree in a closely related field may be eligible for a shorter training period.
First year of training:
Bachelor's degree and/or qualifying experience: FS 15 Step 1 ($55,328/year)
Master's degree: FS 15 Step 2 ($57,320/year)
Second year of training:
General rate: FS 15 Step 5 ($63,306/year)
